Hyperacusis
In hyperacusis, tolerance of ordinary everyday sounds is markedly reduced. Sounds that most people perceive as perfectly normal seem unpleasantly loud, disturbing or even painful to those affected. This may be accompanied by anxiety, discomfort or pain in the face and ear area.
Hyperacusis is thought to be based on excessive amplification within the auditory system (neural gain). It often occurs together with tinnitus or hearing loss, but it can also occur on its own. The diagnosis is made clinically, often supplemented by questionnaires and psychoacoustic tests such as determining the loudness discomfort level (LDL).
How we treat hyperacusis
Therapy is planned individually; its core is audiotherapy. Drug treatments have not become established for hyperacusis so far and are not recommended according to the current literature.
